Most characters in this game will start as mortals (though Beastmen and God-Blooded of various sorts are OK). It is possible for one person to start as a 12-year-old Dragon Blooded child, which'll give them an early edge up and lots of social connections to the dominant empire later.
So players should first MakeAStartingMortal, and have that ready to start play. After or during the first session, they'll UpgradeToAHeroicMortal. Play's going to sit at that level for a couple months of real time, and probably about fifteen years in-game. A few people may Exalt over that time, when their characters do impressively heroic things. At some point, most characters will UpgradeToASupernatural, whether that's an Exalt, a full Spirit, or even one of the Demons or Anathema.
